Home Charger Installation Cost Estimator (Level 1 vs Level 2)

Estimate the total cost to install a home EV charger — including equipment, labor, panel upgrades, and permits — for both Level 1 (120V) and Level 2 (240V) options.

Formulas Used

Wire Material Cost = Wiring Distance (ft) × Wire Cost per Foot ($/ft)
  • Level 1 (14 AWG): $0.30/ft  |  Level 2 ≤32A (10 AWG): $0.80/ft
  • Level 2 33–48A (8 AWG): $1.20/ft  |  Level 2 80A (4 AWG): $2.00/ft

Labor Hours = (Base Hours + Distance Extra Hours) × Wall Multiplier
  • Base: Level 1 = 1.5 hrs; Level 2 = 4.0 hrs
  • Distance Extra = max(0, (Distance − 25 ft) / 50)
  • Wall Multiplier: Drywall = 1.0×; Outdoor = 1.2×; Concrete = 1.5×

Charger Power (Level 2) = (240V × Amperage × 0.85) / 1,000 → kW

Total Cost = Charger Unit + Breaker + Wire + Conduit + Misc + Labor + Panel Upgrade + Permit

Federal Tax Credit (IRS 30C) = min(Total Cost × 30%, $1,000)

Net Cost = Total Cost − Federal Tax Credit
